In the sequel to the acclaimed The Girl of Fire and Thorns, a seventeen-year-old princess turned war queen faces sorcery, adventure, untold power, and romance as she fulfills her epic destiny.

Elisa is the hero of her country. She led her people to victory against a terrifying enemy, and now she is their queen. But she is only seventeen years old. Her rivals may have simply retreated, choosing stealth over battle. And no one within her court trusts her-except Hector, the commander of the royal guard, and her companions. As the country begins to crumble beneath her and her enemies emerge from the shadows, Elisa will take another journey. With a one-eyed warrior, a loyal friend, an enemy defector, and the man she is falling in love with, Elisa crosses the ocean in search of the perilous, uncharted, and mythical source of the Godstone’s power. That is not all she finds. A breathtaking, romantic, and dangerous second volume in the Fire and Thorns trilogy

Review:

5  Stars

I don’t know why I love this series. I’m not a period piece reader and yet when I first read Girl of Fire and Thorn I was so into the world Rae Carson created that I didn’t realize until half way through we weren’t in a modern era.

When I received and ARC of The Crown of Embers I put everything down so I could find out how Princess turned Queen Elisa was going to handle everything and I definitely had to  know if anything was developing between her and Lord Hector.

One thing I absolutely loved in The Crown of Embers was how Elisa, despite her age, wants to be a mother figure to young Rosario. I was very happy to see him return in the sequel.

A few months after the passing of her husband, her reign as Queen is being challenge. The Quorum doesn’t believe she can rule and are insisting on a political marriage. Elisa doesn’t think she needs a husband to rule effectively but is willing to consider anything to keep her people safe. But when someone in her own court makes attempts on her life, she must take drastic measures.

Elisa is challenged throughout The Crown of Embers and each time she’s proven she shouldn’t be messed with her. Her trusted advisor and protector, Hector, is always one step ahead of her and the romance that Rae Carson refuses to write much to my disappointment is looming. I can feel it. In fact, I yell at Elisa to kiss him… repeatedly.

The descriptions during Elisa’s travel definitely make you feel like you’re traveling right along with her entourage. The action scenes are believable and well written and the history is spot on.

This is a series that I recommend to anyone that asks.
